Electrical Modeling of Monolithically Integrated GMR Based Current Sensors

2018

We report on the electrical compact model, using Verilog-A, of a monolithically integrated giant magnetoresistance (GMR) based electrical current sensors. For this purpose, a specifically designed ASIC (AMS $0.35\mu \mathrm{m}$ technology) has been considered, onto which such sensors have been patterned and fabricated, following a two-steps procedure. This work is focused on the DC regime model extraction, giving evidences of its good performance and stating the bases for subsequent model improvements.

Contrasting topologies for regular interconnection networks under the constraints of nanoscale silicon technology

2010

Nowadays, system designers have adopted Networks-on-Chip as communication infrastructure of general-purpose tile-based Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC). Such decision implies that a certain topology has to be selected to efficiently interconnect many cores on the chip. To ease such a choice, the networking literature offers a plethora of works about topology analysis and characterization for the off-chip domain. However, theoretical parameters and many intuitive assumptions of such off-chip networks do not necessarily hold when a topology is laid out on a 2D silicon surface. This is due to the distinctive features of silicon technology design pitfalls. This work is a first milestone t…

Load Torque Estimation Method to Design Electric Drivetrains for Offshore Pipe Handling Equipment

2016

One of the main design objectives for electric drivetrains operating in offshore drilling equipment is to keep them as small, yet as effective, as possible, to minimize space they occupy on drill floor and maximize their performance. However, practical experience shows that typically choices made by design engineers are too conservative due to the lack of enough data characterizing load conditions. This results in too costly and too heavy selected components. Therefore, in the current paper we present a method to estimate required full-scale motor torque using a scaled down experimental setup and its computational model. A gripper arm of an offshore vertical pipe handling machine is selecte…

On the Heuristic Procedure to Determine Processing Parameters in Additive Manufacturing Based on Materials Extrusion

2020

We present a heuristic procedure for determining key processing parameters (PPs) in materials-extrusion-based additive manufacturing processes. The concept relies on a design-of-experiment approach and consists of eleven &ldquo

The use of exploratory experimental designs combined with thermal numerical modelling to obtain a predictive tool for hybrid laser/MIG welding and co…

2011

Abstract While hybrid laser welding and coating processes involve a large number of physical phenomena, it is currently impossible to predict, for a given set of influencing factors, the shape of the molten zone and the history of temperature fields inside the parts. This remains true for complex processes, such as the hybrid laser/MIG welding process, which consists in combining a laser beam with a MIG torch. The gains obtained result essentially from the synergy of the associated processes: the stability of the process, the quality of the seam realized, and the productivity are increased. This article shows how, by means of a reduced number of experiments (8), it is possible to predict th…

Reducing sample size in experiments with animals: historical controls and related strategies

2015

Reducing the number of animal subjects used in biomedical experiments is desirable for ethical and practical reasons. Previous reviews of the benefits of reducing sample sizes have focused on improving experimental designs and methods of statistical analysis, but reducing the size of control groups has been considered rarely. We discuss how the number of current control animals can be reduced, without loss of statistical power, by incorporating information from historical controls, i.e. subjects used as controls in similar previous experiments. Using example data from published reports, we describe how to incorporate information from historical controls under a range of assumptions that mig…

Application of modern computer algebra systems in food formulations and development: A case study

2017

Abstract Background Nutritional security determines the level of public health within a population while inadequate nutrition is one of the major factors in development of various health problems. This can be alleviated with sufficient and affordable access to currently available or newly designed nutritious foods. Scope and approach Formulation of new foods can be very costly, so methods able to lower design expanses are of utmost importance to the industry. Hence, the purpose of this work was to rationalize utilization of modern computerized algebraic systems (CAS) in solving traditional problems for formulating food mixtures by food combinatoric principles (FCP). Key findings and conclus…

Exploring Design Cognition in Voice-Driven Sound Sketching and Synthesis

2021

Conceptual design and communication of sonic ideas are critical, and still unresolved aspects of current sound design practices, especially when teamwork is involved. Design cognition studies in the visual domain represent a valuable resource to look at, to better comprehend the reasoning of designers when they approach a sound-based project. A design exercise involving a team of professional sound designers is analyzed, and discussed in the framework of the Function-Behavior-Structure ontology of design. The use of embodied sound representations of concepts fosters team-building and a more effective communication, in terms of shared mental models.

Other-Repetition as a Resource for Participation in the Activity of Playing a Video Game

2009

This article offers an empirically based contribution to the growing body of studies using Conversation Analysis (CA) as a tool for analyzing second/foreign language learning in and through interaction. Building on a sociointeractional view of learning as grounded in the structures of participation in social activities, we apply CA methods to examine the affordances offered by interaction during the activity of playing a video game for additional language learning. We focus on one type of interactional practice, lexical and prosodic repetition, as a recurring resource through which players attend to the game and collaboratively build their understanding and experience of game events. We arg…

Problem Space Identification for Developing Virtual Reality Learning Environments

2021

Our study argues that the extant literature on virtual reality-based learning environments (VRLEs) currently lacks proper definitions and context descriptions for a problem space, which is fundamental for conducting design science research (DSR). Without properly conducted problem space identification, the most pivotal problems cannot be identified resulting solutions lacking validity and unreliable evaluations. This is a major challenge for the DSR in the educational field, but also for the research on VRLEs. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a novel DSR method to support rigorous problem space identification, which would allow rigorous and profound problem space analysis. The inst…
